UGANDAN opposition leader Bobi Wine has hit back from hiding, insisting that he is “not a criminal.”

Mr Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, escaped what he said had been a police raid on his home last Friday, following last week’s presidential election. His present whereabouts are unknown.

According to official results, President Yoweri Museveni won 71.65 per cent, with Mr Wine, a musician turned politician, securing 24.72 per cent.

But Mr Wine said he rejected the “fake” results and urged Ugandans to peacefully protest until the “rightful results are announced.”

Army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba – the son of Mr Museveni – threatened in a social media post on Tuesday to hunt down and kill Mr Wine, accusing him of being a “terrorist.”

In a separate post, Mr Kainerugaba gave Mr Wine “exactly 48 hours to surrender himself to the police,” adding: “If he doesn’t, we will treat him as an outlaw/rebel and handle him accordingly.”

Mr Kainerugaba has made no secret of his ambition to succeed his father as president.

In a phone interview on Wednesday, Mr Wine said he was constantly on the move and being “housed and protected by the common people.”

“I’m a presidential candidate and it’s not a crime to run against his father,” he added.
