Unite workers at First Glasgow secure pay boost

UNITE workers at First Glasgow have accepted an above-inflation pay deal secured after they unanimously voted for strike action.

About 50 cleaners, fuellers and shunters based at the Caledonia, Scotstoun, Blantyre and Overtown bus depots were due to strike between January 13 and 17 as they called for a pay deal in line with that secured for drivers.

The strike was suspended after the company, which saw combined profits across the depots totalling £14.1 million (First Glasgow No 1) in March 2024, and £11.2m (First Glasgow No 2) in March 2025, tabled a new pay offer worth 5 per cent.

Paying tribute to the workers for “standing firm,” Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “It was only the threat of strike action which ensured the company came back to the negotiating table with an enhanced offer.”

Unite industrial officer Graham McNab said: “First Glasgow ultimately had to listen to the workers who simply wanted a fair and reasonable pay offer which they got in the end after showing the company that they were fully prepared to fight to get it.”
