Welsh Labour leader urges Starmer to stand up to Trump
First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan delivers a speech during the Wales Investment Summit at the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport, December 1, 2025

WELSH First Minister Eluned Morgan urged Sir Keir Starmer today to stand up to Donald Trump and for “the values we hold dear.”

The Welsh Labour leader wrote to Sir Keir about the threat to Welsh jobs after the US president threatened Britain and other countries with additional tariffs over Greenland.

“We must stand by our allies and the values we hold dear,” the First Minister said in a markedly more anti-Trump stance than the Prime Minister.

In the letter, Ms Morgan underlined the importance of US firms to the Welsh economy and expressed her desire to ensure a strong and constructive relationship with the US continues.

In the year ending September 2025, Welsh goods exports, excluding oil products, to the United States were valued at £2.1 billion.

More than 1,000 Welsh businesses, about a third of Wales’ exporters, send goods to the US.

Welsh exports to the US are made up of a higher proportion of goods (59 per cent) compared to the rest of the country (32 per cent).

“Threatening the use of tariffs is an unacceptable and aggressive act from a country we consider a friend and ally,” Ms Morgan said.

“Welsh jobs are on the line and as First Minister I will defend them to the hilt.

“There comes a point where principle must be respected.

“It is the people of Greenland and Denmark who should be determining the future of the island, and international law must be upheld.

“We cannot continue to be threatened with more tariffs by Donald Trump.”
