Sport in brief: January 9, 2026

MEN’S CRICKET: Jacob Bethell was the only top order English batsman to improve his test average during the recent Ashes series. To highlight their failings, pace bowler Jofra Archer ended up higher in the averages than Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Jamie Smith and captain Ben Stokes. Joe Root finished as the series’ second highest scorer with 400 runs, way behind Travis Head who knocked up 629 for the Aussies at an average of 69.2.

MEN’S BOXING: Sheffield’s unbeaten Dalton Smith fights Puerto Rican Subriel Matias for his WBC super lightweight belt in New York on Sunday morning. Despite failing a drugs test for the banned muscle-growth stimulant Ostarine in November Matias is still being allowed to defend his title. Smith, a former European and Commonwealth youth champion, has won all 18 of his professional bouts and currently holds the European light-welterweight belt.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Kostja Mushidi top-scored with 22 points as Chemnitz put a big dent in London’s hopes of reaching the EuroCup play-offs with their 78-70 midweek victory at the Copper Box arena. France’s Bourg-en-Bresse became the first team to book their place in the end of season competition with an 86-73 win at lowly Panevezys while Hamburg’s winless season continued with a 13th consecutive loss, 94-98 against Lithuania’s Neptunas Klapeda.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The FA Trophy fourth round kicks off tomorrow afternoon with Anstey Nomads and Clitheroe both looking to continue their giant-killing exploits on visits to Halifax and Scarborough. Fellow tier eight team Leatherhead face Horsham in the A24 derby. Three-time champions Woking are up against two-time winners Macclesfield in Tuesday’s televised match. All winners receive £5,250 in prize money, losers just £1,500.
