SCORE: Napoli's David Neres, centre, celebrates after scoring during the Italian Super Cup final soccer match between Napoli and Bologna in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Brazilian winger David Neres scored twice as the current Serie A champions Napoli beat Bologna 2-0 in Tuesday’s Italian Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia. Napoli had beaten AC Milan 2–0 in Thursday’s last-four match on the way to picking up the trophy for the third time in their history. Bologna, who have never won the cup, squeezed past Inter Milan on penalties after a 1–1 draw to reach the final.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Cape Town Stormers will head into Christmas on top of the United Rugby Championship with the competition’s only remaining 100 per cent record. Second-placed Munster are three points off the pace, with defending champions and nine-time winners Leinster eight points further back in sixth. The Irish clubs meet at Thomond Park, Limerick, on Saturday evening after Cape Town have visited the Pretoria Bulls.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: A new Salford-based team created by a consortium led by former player Mason Caton-Brown has been admitted into next year’s Championship competition, which is due to begin with their match at Oldham on January 16. Former Super League team Salford Red Devils were wound up on December 3 with unpaid debts of approximately £700,000 after being relegated from the Super League with only three wins from 27 games.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Ivan Toney was on the scoresheet as defending champions Al-Ahli eased to a 5-0 win at Baghdad’s Al Shorta to seal qualification for the Asian Champions League Elite knockout rounds. Joining the Saudis from their western group are compatriots Al-Hilal, Iran’s Tractor SC and United Arab Emirates-based Al Wahda. With two games to go, Japan’s Vissel Kobe are the only team definitely through from the Eastern Group.
