Storm Bram batters Britain

WEATHER warnings remained in place across Scotland today as Britain recovers from its battering by Storm Bram.

Thousands of homes across Wales, south-west England and the Midlands were hit by power cuts in the aftermath of the storm’s peak on Tuesday night, with gusts of up to 90mph overturning lorries on the M74/M6 link between Scotland and England.

By Wednesday morning, 30 flood warnings and 138 flood alerts remained in place in England, with 11 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts in Wales, and 20 flood warnings and 15 flood alerts in Scotland.

All 30 of CalMac’s lifeline ferry services on the west coast have either faced disruption or cancellation, but while ScotRail said the vast majority of services are now operating, the storm is however not over.

The Met Office warned that “very strong winds and disruption” with a risk of flying debris, building damage, and power cuts remain.

And the forecaster also issued a wind weather warning for three of Scotland’s most populous areas, covering Shetland Islands, Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, and the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
