CWU stands with striking Unite Hospitality workers
Dave Ward, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), December 9, 2022

COMMUNICATION Workers’ Union (CWU) general secretary Dave Ward paid a solidarity visit to Glasgow’s striking Unite Hospitality workers’ picket line at Village Hotel, Govan at the weekend.

Mr Ward reflected on the struggle of the workers, who made history over the summer with the first strike at a major hotel chain in over four decades, as well as the Labour government’s decision to water down its Employment Rights Bill on first day rights for workers.

He told the Star: “The CWU stands in complete solidarity with the Unite Hospitality workers on this picket.

“They have been an inspiration with their victories in recent months, and they remain so.

“As the gig economy grows in the postal, telecoms and tech sectors, we in the CWU know that only sectoral bargaining will ultimately change the game – and that’s a story the young workers on this picket and throughout hospitality know only too well.

“New legislation may deliver a floor, but ultimately the prize is collective sectoral bargaining.

“We don’t need to wait on politicians to deliver that, the trade union movement needs to come together, co-ordinate our efforts and our demands, and deliver it ourselves.”
