PRESIDENT Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his plan to end the war in Ukraine has been “fine-tuned” and he’s sending envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet Ukrainian officials.
President Trump suggested he could eventually meet with President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but not until further progress has been made in negotiations.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, President Trump said resolving the war was difficult, and described what had been a 28-point plan as a work in progress.
“That was not a plan — it was a concept,” President Trump said.
Mr Trump’s plan for ending the nearly four-year war emerged last week.
European leaders apparently felt sidelined by President Trump’s proposals and, during a meeting with President Zelensky, revised them down to 19.
The revised 19-point plan was agreed by Ukraine on Tuesday, but no details of the plan have emerged.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that peace efforts are gathering momentum and “are clearly at a crucial juncture.”
Russia claimed on Tuesday that it only received sight of the 29-point plan by informal means and had to receive the new revised proposals.
President Trump said that he believed Mr Witkoff would be meeting with Mr Putin next week in Moscow, with his son-in-law Jared Kushner potentially joining the meeting.
“People are starting to realise it’s a good deal for both parties,” Mr Trump said.
The president played down the element of his original plan that would require Ukraine to cede territory to Russia, including requiring the Ukrainians to cede the entirety of its eastern Donbas region.
President Trump suggested Russian forces were already likely to seize the land they’re seeking.
The US president said that the land was likely to “be gotten by Russia” over the next couple of months anyway.
