AGENCY bin drivers in Birmingham are being bullied by having their driving mistakes ranked in a league table plastered across the wall in their staff room, Unite claimed today.
The union reports that a table at Smithfield depot has listed drivers’ tachograph readings, which track driving time, speed, distance and other data, and ranked staff by infringements.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The public ranking of the drivers’ tachograph infringements is just another bullying tactic, along with blacklisting threats, to keep them in line.”
The union has written to the council warning that the table is a serious GDPR breach.
Workers, employed by Job & Talent employment agency, have little protection, the union says, despite some of them working at the council for more than a decade.
Last month, a manager was caught on camera telling agency workers that council chiefs will ban them from permanent jobs if they refuse to cross picket lines.
Unite says that growing numbers of agency staff are refusing to cross the picket lines of striking bin workers on council contracts amid bullying and unsustainable workloads.
Agency staff will launch their own walkout on Monday.
A Birmingham Council spokesperson said: “We strongly refute allegations of bullying.
“The purpose of the communication was about ongoing service improvements but we acknowledge that names should not have been published and the notice has been removed.
“However, an overview of key performance indicators will continue to be shared to help drive improvement, which is standard practice.”
Job & Talent said that the league table did not originate nor was published by the firm.
Previous statements said that it does “not engage in or condone any form of blacklisting” and that it takes “any allegation concerning worker welfare and safety extremely seriously.”
