TOP European and Ukrainian envoys met in Geneva today ahead of talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio over President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the Ukraine war.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation, presidential chief of staff Andrii Yermak, posted to social media that they had held their first meeting with the national security advisers from France, Germany and Britain.
The allies have rallied around Kiev in a push to revise the plan, which they believe favours Moscow.
Mr Rubio was expected to join the talks together with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
In a post on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today: “Ukrainian and US teams, teams of our European partners — are in close contact, and I very much hope there will be a result.
“Bloodshed must be stopped and it must be guaranteed that the war will not be reignited.”
The 28-point blueprint drawn up by the US has sparked alarm in Kiev and European capitals.
President Zelensky says his country could face a stark choice between standing up for its sovereign rights and preserving the US support it needs.
France’s minister delegate at the Defence Ministry Alice Rufo told broadcaster France Info that any restrictions on the size of the Ukrainian army would be “a limitation on its sovereignty.”
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, President Trump said the US proposal was not his “final offer.”
He said: “I would like to get to peace. It should have happened a long time ago.”
Comments from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov that the need for talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mr Trump “remains to be determined” come as speculation grows that there have been no official discussions with the Russians over the Trump plan.
