THE University and College Union (UCU) announced a combined 28 days of strike action against job cuts at Sheffield’s two universities today.
The University of Sheffield plans to save at least £5 million by slashing staff and is expected to reveal the full details and number of job losses over the next two weeks, the union said.
Sheffield Hallam managers meanwhile have refused to rule out compulsory redundancies having cut around 670 jobs since 2024.
Union members are due to walk out from November 11 to December 12.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: “There is no justification for compulsory redundancies at the University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam, especially when there are other options available.
“If the employers do not see sense and reverse the job cuts, they can expect to see disruption across the city in November and December.”
Both universities were contacted for comment.
