YEMENI security officials raided a United Nations facility in the capital, Sanaa, on Saturday, a UN official said.

Jean Alam, a spokesman for the UN resident co-ordinator for Yemen, said 15 UN staff members were in the facility at the time.

“According to the latest information all staff in the compound are safe and accounted for and have contacted their families,” he said.

The Yemenis also raided UN offices in Sanaa on August 31 and detained 19 employees, according to the UN.

They later released the deputy director of the Unicef office in the country but still held more than 50 people, including many associated with aid groups, civil society and the now-closed US embassy in Sanaa.

The Yemenis didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, but have previously alleged that UN staff detained in August were spies — something denied by the world body.

Saturday’s raid was the latest in a crackdown by the Houthi-led authorities against the UN and other international organisations.

The UN was forced to suspend operations in Saada province, northern Yemen, following the detention of eight staff in January.
