First Minister accuses Reform and Tories of spreading lies in Wales
Wales First Minister Eluned Morgan at the Labour Party Conference at the ACC Liverpool, September 28, 2025

REFORM UK and Welsh Conservatives were accused at today’s First Minister’s Questions of whipping up community division and lying to the people of Wales.

First Minister Eluned Morgan’s uncompromising response was to Reform’s sole Senedd member, Laura Anne Jones, who defected at the end of July.

The former Tory called for an end to the Nation of Sanctuary, claiming it sent a message to those arriving illegally that they'll be looked after before Welsh families.

“Eighty two per cent of the Nation of Sanctuary budget was spent on supporting Ukrainian arrivals to Wales between 2022 and 2024,” Ms Morgan said.

“Promising things to people that simply are not ours to deliver is pulling the wool over people’s eyes.”

The Labour leader said it was important to be honest with the public on this issue and honest in places like Caerphilly, “where Reform is whipping up anti-immigration policies.”

The FM said that Caerphilly has the lowest percentage of people born overseas in Wales at just 2.9 per cent, with many working in health and care services.

Welsh Conservative Altaf Hussain, who is a former NHS surgeon, drew a passionate denunciation from the FM.

Mr Altaf said: “Wales has a housing crisis and I have constituents living in tents, and yet we are to take thousands of migrants.”

The FM said Mr Altaf was “worse than Reform in what you’ve just said. That is absolutely unacceptable. You’re whipping up division in our communities.

“I want to bring our communities together. I don’t want to see them divided,” Ms Morgan added.
