Trump's Gaza peace plan sparks fury as Blair to join ‘Board of Peace’
Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair during an interview, March 27, 2023

FURY erupted over Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan today after it was confirmed that Sir Tony Blair would have a seat on a “board of peace” overseeing a transitional governing committee for the Palestinian territory.

As campaigners hit out a “blueprint for permanent occupation,” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in supporting the US president’s 20-point scheme.

The plan states that, if both sides agree, there will be an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces to “the agreed-upon line” and the release of all hostages held by Hamas, followed by the release of Palestinian prisoners and a surge of aid deliveries into Gaza.

The coastal enclave will then be temporarily governed by a transitional committee of qualified Palestinian and international experts, with oversight from a new international transitional body, referred to as the “board of peace.”

This would be chaired by Mr Trump, working alongside other international leaders, including former British prime minister Sir Tony.

A Stop the War Coalition spokeswoman said: “This isn’t a peace plan, it’s the imposition of a blueprint for permanent occupation, with the war criminal Tony Blair playing a key role in the continued ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Palestinian people.”

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn MP said: “Tony Blair’s catastrophic decision to invade Iraq cost thousands upon thousands of lives.

“He shouldn’t be anywhere near the Middle East, let alone Gaza.

“It is not up to Blair, Trump or Netanyahu to decide the future of Gaza. That is up to the people of Palestine.”

He added: “Today, schoolchildren are taught about history’s worst crimes against humanity.

“In the future, they will learn about those who enabled the genocide in Gaza.

“They will also learn about the global movement for peace and, above all, the resilience of the Palestinian people.”

Sir Keir hailed Mr Trump’s plan as “profoundly welcome,” adding: “We strongly support his efforts to end the fighting, release the hostages and ensure the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza.

“Hamas should now agree to the plan and end the misery by laying down their arms and releasing all remaining hostages.”

The “board of peace” would set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until the Palestinian Authority has undergone “sufficient reform” for it to take over.
