Hamas says it is considering Trump's peace plan before responding

HAMAS said today that it will consider United States President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza within the group and with other Palestinian resistance groups before responding.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already thrown his support behind it, but it’s unclear whether Hamas will agree and when it would give its response.

Mr Trump said today that Hamas has three or four days to accept the 20-point ultimatum or else “Israel will do what it has to do.”

The scheme demands that Hamas effectively surrender and disarm in return for an end to fighting, humanitarian aid for Palestinians and only a vague promise that maybe some day Palestinian statehood might be possible.

For the foreseeable future, Gaza would be put under international control. An international security force would move in, and a “board of peace” headed by Mr Trump and former British prime minister Tony Blair would oversee Gaza’s administration and reconstruction.

The territory would remain surrounded by Israeli troops.

Many in the international community urged Hamas to accept the ultimatum.

Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the plan as the “best chance for ending the war,” while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez welcomed the scheme and said a two-state solution was “the only possible one” for the Middle East.

French President Emmanuel Macron insisted that “Hamas has no choice but to immediately release all hostages and follow this plan.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun took a more measured view.

Mr Guo said Beijing calls “on all relevant parties” to “immediately achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, release all detainees and alleviate the humanitarian disaster in the region as soon as possible.”

China supports a two-state solution and is willing to work with the international community for a “comprehensive, just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian issue,” Mr Guo said.

But Palestinian National Initiative secretary-general Mustafa Barghouti said that he was disappointed with the plan.

He said: “Trump’s plan ignored the Palestinians and the root cause of the conflict which is the Israeli occupation and apartheid.

“There are no guarantees that Netanyahu will not reactivate his genocidal war after he gets back the Israeli captives. The Israeli troops will stay in Gaza for a long time and there are no guarantees of full withdrawal.”

He said that the plans were full of mines with the worst being “the imposition of foreign rule on Palestinians in Gaza, which will separate the Gaza Strip from the West Bank and undermine any potential of an independent Palestinian state.”
