The fight was stopped after the sixth round due to injuries sustained by both boxers following a clash of heads. On the undercard former two-time super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina returned to the ring after a 14-month absence to out-point Mexico’s Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz.
MEN’S RUGBY UNION: While the British and Irish Lions struggled to 21-10 win over the Waratahs, George Ford scored 15 points on his 100th appearance for England as the tourists romped to a 35-12 win in Argentina. Wales suffered a record-breaking 18th consecutive test match loss after going down 24-19 to Japan, Scotland held on to beat the Maori All Blacks 29-26 and an inexperienced Ireland team eased to a 34-5 win in Georgia.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Full back Kaeo Weekes bagged a hat-trick as Canberra held off St George Illawarra 28-24 to top the National Rugby League by two points from Melbourne, who edged to a 26-20 win at North Queensland. Former league leaders Canterbury went down 22-18 to the Brisbane Broncos. Wests held off the Roosters 30-28 on Sunday morning and Manly beat South Sydney 30-12 to climb back into the play-off places.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Nine-time winners and defending champions Mexico face the USA for the Concacaf Gold Cup in Houston tomorrow morning. Managed by Mauricio Pochettino the Americans are the tournament’s leading scorers while Mexico have only conceded twice in their five games. The US are ranked as the world’s 16th best team, one place above Mexico. Along with Canada both countries are due to co-host next year’s World Cup.
