Greater political education for union members needed to defeat Reform, RMT delegates say
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage speaks during a press conference in Port Talbot, Wales, June 9, 2025

GREATER political education for union members is needed to defeat Reform, RMT delegates declared at their AGM.

Sarabjit Gill from Paddington No 1 said: “We must challenge any policies that undermine workers’ rights and the false claims that migrant workers create social and economic inequality.”

Ms Gill added that there was a job of work to do because she had suffered racially aggravated comments from fellow trade unionists.

Assistant general secretary John Leach said: “We need to reach members who have voted Reform because they are an anti-trade union political party.”

Despite the fact that the motion was adopted unanimously, some delegates questioned what the best tactics were to engage fellow members around the issues.

Nathan Reynolds of the Yorkshire and District said he entirely supported the sentiment of the motion but urged delegates to “box clever,” referring to colleagues who are “politically misguided” but not racist and have never scabbed during strike action.

He said: “They’ve been swayed into Reform because there is a political vacuum.”
