When Patterson and Liston met in the ring in 1962, it was more than a title bout — it was a collision of two black archetypes shaped by white America’s fears and fantasies, writes JOHN WIGHT
SPEEDWAY: Max Fricke scored a perfect 15 points from five rides and Ryan Douglas bagged 14+3 as Leicester Lions demolished defending Premiership champions Belle Vue 60-30 on Thursday night. The Lions didn’t lose a heat all meeting and picked up six maximum 5-1 wins. Sheffield moved top of the table after they squeezed past King’s Lynn 47-43 thanks to brothers Jack and Chris Holder taking the points in the last heat.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: It’s a repeat of last year’s final as champions England are up against Spain in the last eight of the European Under 21s Championships tomorrow night. Spain were unbeaten in their three group games whereas England suffered their first defeat, 2-1 to Germany, last Wednesday. Tomorrow evening’s other last eight tie sees Portugal take on the Netherlands before Denmark play France and Germany meet Italy on Sunday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Indiana’s all-round attacking game picked off Oklahoma City 108-91 on Friday morning to level the NBA finals series at 3-3 and put everything on the line for Monday’s deciding Larry O’Brien trophy match. It’s only the third time in 20 years that the finals have gone to a decider. Indiana are the first team to ever have eight players score at least 200 points in an NBA season.
HOCKEY: England’s women have the worst scoring record in the Pro League and sit just one place off the bottom of the table before they face Spain, the team with the worst defence, in a double header at Lee Valley on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. England’s men will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 3-0 loss against Australia and two defeats to the Netherlands when they take on the Aussies twice more over the weekend.
