CAMPAIGNERS slammed the Welsh Language Commissioner today for its response to complaints over a council’s swimming lessons.
Welsh language campaigner group Cymdeithas yr Iaith said the commissioner’s report into a complaint about Wrexham Council’s swimming provision failed to address previous enforcement actions against the council.
Cymdeithas said a contractor’s ongoing failure to recruit Welsh speakers to provide swimming lessons raised questions about the council’s commitment to the language and the commissioner’s procedures.
Cymdeitha’s Sian Howys said: “The commissioner’s report states that previous enforcement actions have been imposed on Wrexham Council to address Freedom Leisure’s shortcomings and the situation has not improved.
“Why hadn’t the Welsh Language Commissioner noticed this deficiency? After enforcement actions are put in place, shouldn’t someone be keeping track of the need for compliance?” Ms Howys said.
A Welsh Language Commissioner spokesperson said: “With reference to the previous enforcement actions imposed relating to the website pages, the actions proposed were completed at the time. However in our recent report we note that, in light of previous actions completed, we were disappointed to find further failings in the Council’s implementation of the Standards.”
