INTERNET giant Google found itself with explaining to do yesterday after allowing a game entitled Bomb Gaza to be uploaded onto its software store.
The game — in which players fire airstrikes at Palestinians from Israeli planes — was taken down after hundreds of complaints came through.
Gamer William Howgate left a complaint under the comment section saying: “WTF. There is ongoing conflict in which people are dying and you seem to find it acceptable to make a game of it. That’s fucked up.”
Another reviewer labeled the game “utterly shameful.”
“These games glorify the horror and violence of the bombing of Gaza, sanitising for a younger generation what is a dreadful conflict that has killed thousands,” said Council for Arab-British Understanding director Chris Doyle.
Bomb Gaza had been downloaded over 1,000 times by the times it was removed.
“We don’t comment on individual apps, but will remove apps that breach our guidelines,” a Google spokesman said.
The company’s software store Google Play bans any content including bullying, violence and hate speech.
But Bomb Gaza is only one of several other games under the same theme available on Play.
Gaza Assault: Code Red recreates a drone piloting system in which the gamer flies over the Gaza Strip. Reviewers gave it a five-star rating.
Whack the Hamas, Iron Dome and Defending Israel: Southern Escalation are all games under the same theme and available for download on the store for Google’s Android mobile operating system.
Games trade body Ukie declined to comment.
