GB pair Roberts and McArthur into boulder and lead final

BRITISH pair Toby Roberts and Hamish McArthur have qualified for sport climbing’s boulder and lead final at the Paris Olympics.

Roberts finished second in qualifying after today’s semi-final lead section on 122.2 points, with McArthur placed eighth on 79.3.

The top eight climbers progressed to tomorrow’s final, with Japan’s Sorato Anraku leading the way on a score of 137.

Roberts had promised after finishing third in boulder that his lead was the stronger of the two disciplines in the event.

“I’m feeling really good,” the 19-year-old from Surrey said after scoring 68.1 points on lead.

“I’m really happy to have made the final.

“I’ve just got to go in there with a clear head and not put any expectation on myself.

“Obviously, I’ve qualified in second place, so I’m hoping to be able to achieve good things in the final.

“But the best way for me to do that is just go and enjoy it and not think about the medal necessarily.”

York’s McArthur, who started the day in eighth place after the boulder section, said: “I thought it was a really fun route.

“The climbing on it was very flowy and smooth if you did it right. It’s definitely a problem solver’s dream.”

The eight finalists start from scratch tomorrow with semi-final scores disregarded.
