Student march against fees planned for November 19

THOUSANDS of students will take to the streets later this year for free education, a coalition of action groups announced yesterday.

A national demonstration against fees and student debt is to be held on November 19, merely a month after the date set by trade unions for their own day of action.

“We are calling this demonstration to take the fight to the government,” said National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) spokeswoman Beth Redmond.

Fellow student groups Student Assembly Against Austerity and the Young Greens also rallied behind the NCAFC.

It is the first time the three organisations have worked together.

The event is expected to be a success after this year’s National Union of Students' conference overwhelmingly supported free education policy.

“Years of tuition fees have lumbered millions with debt, and the system isn’t working,” added Young Greens co-chairman Clifford Fleming.

Ms Redmond echoed the sentiment saying it was “clear that fees have failed” because “higher and further education are now off limits” to many.

Speaking to the Star last month, NCAFC co-founder and current University of London Union president Michael Chessum said that “students have a big role to play in the autumn in terms of linking together days [of action] into something more interesting and disruptive.”

His wishes might come true after the day’s Facebook event grew to a whopping 400 people attending in less than 12 hours.

The NCAFC became known during the student movement for co-ordinating many of the protests in the winter of 2010.
