Andy Burnham wins race for top job in Manchester
LABOUR’S Andy Burnham has been elected mayor of Greater Manchester with almost three times as many votes as his Conservative rival.
The former Cabinet minister and MP for Leigh took more than 60 per cent of the poll with 359,352 votes. Tory candidate Sean Anstee came second with 128,752 votes.
Mr Burnham will be the first metro mayor of Greater Manchester, one of a number of new posts created as part of a devolution of powers from Whitehall to the biggest cities and regions outside London.
