Fire-and-rehire tactic the lowest of the low
Employers are taking advantage of the ongoing lockdown to slash pay and conditions. TONY BURKE explains

FIRE and rehire has been described by Unite general secretary Len McCluskey as a “disease that’s ripping through our workplaces.”

TUC unions are fighting fierce battles against employers who are using the illegitimate tactic to opportunistically level down pay and conditions at a time when workers are worried about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A number of unions have come up against the tactic including Unite at British Airways, Douwe Egberts coffee and Go North West buses in Manchester, for example.
