Work with the NEU
World in brief: May 12, 2020

IRAQ: The UN announced on Monday that it has found “clear and compelling evidence” that Islamic State (Isis) extremists committed genocide against the Yazidi minority in 2014 and said the militant group successfully developed chemical weapons and used mustard gas.

A 2016 UN inquiry had already accused Isis of committing genocide against Yazidis but the new study says its work is more important because it was tasked with finding evidence that could stand up in court where the burden of proof is on the prosecution.

IRAN: Registrations for potential presidential candidates opened yesterday as the country heads to the poll in June.
