Sturgeon urged to ‘set an example’ by opposing the Cambo oil field project
Labour MSP Monica Lennon calls on Scottish government ‘to join with Scottish Labour and campaigners’ and oppose the project ‘for the sake of our planet’

LABOUR MSP Monica Lennon has urged Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to “set an example” before November’s Cop26 climate conference by opposing the Cambo oil field project.

The Scottish government has so far refused to categorically oppose plans to begin drilling at the site, which is situated about 75 miles to the west of Shetland and contains more than 800 million barrels of oil.

Up to 132 million tonnes of carbon could be released if the project is given the green light, with claims that it would require a land mass 1.5 times the size of Scotland to environmentally counter the emissions.

Holyrood ministers have warned that the UN climate summit could be the last chance for humanity to stop the most devastating impacts of climate change.

But Ms Sturgeon has refused to say that her government will reject the Cambo plans, telling climate activists that it was not a devolved issue.

In her letter to Ms Sturgeon, Ms Lennon said: “With all eyes on Scotland ahead of Cop26, it has never been more important to meet our obligations to the world and set the right example.

“This means taking an unequivocal position on new oil and gas plans, such as the proposed Cambo oil field off the west coast of Shetland.

“Despite the lack of leadership from ministers in the UK and Scottish governments, the people-powered Stop Cambo campaign is gaining momentum.

“First Minister, they need you to use your voice and influence to oppose Cambo.

“For the sake of our planet, I am asking the Scottish government to join with Scottish Labour and campaigners in opposing the Cambo oil field.”
