MPs, scientists and climate activists took action yesterday, urging the government to reject Rosebank oil field.

More than 100 climate activists gathered on Westminster Bridge, unfurling a large “Stop Rosebank” banner opposite Parliament, urging ministers to show that “climate leadership means rejecting” the controversial North Sea project.

Rosebank’s owner, Equinor, is expected to reapply for development after its 2023 approval was ruled unlawful for failing to assess full climate impacts.

This time, emissions from burning the extracted oil and gas must be considered.

The decision is seen as a key test of the government’s climate credibility as scientists warn that no new oil and gas fields can be developed without breaching the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C limit.

Lauren MacDonald of Stop Rosebank said: “This government now has a second chance to make the right call.

“The UK simply cannot claim climate leadership while approving massive new oil fields.

“Rejecting Rosebank would be a turning point – and the clearest sign yet that this government is serious about delivering on its climate promises.”
