IRANIAN oil workers have launched a campaign calling on the government to recognise independent trade unions following a groundbreaking meeting in Tehran last month.
Under pressure from wildcat strikes and protests, the Ministry of Labour met workers’ representatives from the Union of Metalworkers and Mechanics of Iran (UMMI) to try to resolve the lengthy dispute.
Workers are urging the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi to formalise the arrangement and bring industrial relations in Iran in line with global standards.
