MORPETH TOWN boss Craig Lynch says the Highwaymen’s upcoming Northumberland FA Senior Cup Final against Blyth Spartans will be a great occasion.
“The Senior Cup is something we’ve got to look forward to and try and get to. I’m delighted that we’re going to have a showpiece at St James’s Park and I can’t wait,” he said.
“The city is buzzing at the minute, the stadium is fantastic, we’re obviously not going to get 52,000 but hopefully we can get a good couple of thousand there. It’s a good Cup, it’s the County Cup and it’s played at one of the best stadiums in the country, if not the world.”
Northern Premier League Premier Division Morpeth booked their spot in the final with a convincing 5-0 win over Whitley Bay at Craik Park.
Andrew Johnson helped himself to four of those goals and admitted he could have had more.
“Everyone wants to play at St James’s and win a trophy, that’s what football is all about. So we’re delighted,” he said.
“It would be a good way to end the season with a final to look forward to.”
Blyth Spartans, of the National League North, are the current holders of the Senior Cup and the highest-ranked non-League side in Northumberland.
Over 1,000 were at their semi-final win at Heaton Stannington where sub Cedric Main netted the only goal in the second half.
Newcastle United’s St James’s Park has hosted the Senior Cup Final, with a few exceptions, since 1890. The date for the game is yet to be set.
