Calls for probe into Tories' handling of serial rapist MP claims
The Houses of Parliament in London

CAMPAIGNERS and the opposition demanded today that the Conservatives investigate their complaints procedures following allegations that a Tory MP committed a series of rapes — and was able to continue working in Parliament.

Former Tory Party chairman Sir Jake Berry was said to have warned the police that an internal “failure” to act on allegations allowed the unnamed MP to “continue to offend.”

Labour Party chairwoman Anneliese Dodds called the allegations “deeply concerning and extremely serious” as she urged the Tories to investigate.

Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain also urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to launch an investigation over the “deeply disturbing” claims.

Andrea Simon, director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, told the Morning Star:  "It is difficult to take seriously commitments to tackling violence against women by the government when we’re seeing a series of MPs face allegations of rape and sexual misconduct, and a lack of transparency about how these are handled.

“We join calls for a full investigation into political parties’ handling of reports of sexual violence, as well as Parliament's independent complaints body, and for party leaders to take meaningful action to tackle institutional cultures which normalise and tolerate violence against women.”

Sir Jake reportedly wrote to police saying that the MP targeted as many as five people with little to no consequence, with some of the allegations including multiple rapes.

He said that the “failure of others to act has enabled” the MP to “continue to offend and to victimise women,” according to a copy of a letter obtained by the Mail On Sunday.

Today Mr Sunak described the claims as “serious anonymous allegations,” insisting his party’s complaints procedures were robust.
