New report exposes ‘gig-economy’ reality of prestigious university research departments
A woman looking at matter under a microscope, May 19, 2008

PRESTIGIOUS university research departments are using gig-economy employment practices, a new report has revealed.

Two in three research-only staff in Britain’s universities are employed on fixed-term contracts, a figure that has changed little in the last decade, a report by the University & College Union (UCU) has found.

The figure is even higher at some of the Russell Group universities, which includes some of the most prestigious and research-intensive institutions.
