Lobbyist working with Rachel Reeves employed by firm representing Shein
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves takes applause after she addressed the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, September 23, 2024

A LOBBYIST working with Chancellor Rachel Reeves is employed by a firm representing Shein — the fast fashion firm which is seeking to go public on the London Stock Exchange, Democracy for Sale has claimed.

The news website, which investigates dark money and hidden influence, has claimed that Kamella Hudson was a member of Ms Reeves’s campaign team and worked unpaid for the chancellor during the election and at the Labour conference.

Ms Hudson is a partner at the consultancy FGS, which lobbies for Chinese firm Shein, and is currently seeking to go public in Britain following concerns that the US won’t approve its initial public offering.

It is understood that FGS sponsored a reception after the chancellor’s speech, which included 125 business leaders and 20 FGS clients, Democracy for Sale said.

Labour backed Shein’s potential listing in June.

Susan Hawley, executive director of monitoring group Spotlight on Corruption, told Democracy for Sale: “The government needs to work hard to avoid the perception that its policy agenda is being dictated by corporate lobbyists.

“People need to know that the new government’s policies are being developed in the public interest rather than in the interests of business groups with privileged access to ministers.”

The Treasury has been contacted for comment.
