THE SNP has used the fifth anniversary of Brexit to call on the Labour Westminster government to “return to the European fold.”
Despite campaigning for independence in the 2014 referendum, which, if successful, would have taken Scotland out of the EU in 2016, the SNP has opposed the 2016 EU referendum result being honoured.
The SNP pointed to research conducted for the party by the Commons library that suggests exports to the EU have dropped from £216 billion in 2019 to £187bn and imports from £309bn to £301bn.
SNP Europe spokesman Stephen Gethins branded Brexit “political and economic madness.”
Calling for re-entry to the EU customs union and single market, he added: “It’s time for the Labour government to recognise that this is the only route to recovery and the only economic escape from broken Brexit Britain.
“Five years on, it’s time to end the isolationism and return to the European fold.”
On Thursday, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said the Westminster government would work to “improve the relationship on trade and investment and work with the EU to identify areas which are in the UK’s national interest.”
