LIBYA: A boat carrying 13 Egyptian migrants to Europe capsized off the coast, killing all but one of those on board, local authorities and a Libyan group said yesterday.

Al-Abreen, a group that provides humanitarian assistance to migrants in Libya, said on Facebook that the boat had capsized 37 miles east of the city of Tobruk on Monday evening.

GERMANY: The government protested to Iran yesterday over the execution of Iranian-German prisoner Jamshid Sharmahd, a resident of the United States who was kidnapped in Dubai in 2020 by Iranian security forces, and recalled its ambassador to Berlin for consultations.

The Foreign Ministry wrote on X that Iran’s charge d’affaires in Berlin had been summoned to hear “our sharp protest” against Tehran’s action, adding that it reserved the right to take “further measures.” 

RUSSIA: President Vladimir Putin launched a massive exercise by his country’s nuclear forces yesterday, featuring practice missile firing, amid spiralling tensions with the West over Ukraine.

Speaking in a video call with military leaders, Mr Putin said that the drills would simulate top officials’ action in using nuclear weapons and include practice launches of nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.

GUINEA: Authorities in the west African nation dissolved dozens of political parties and placed two major opposition groups under observation on Monday night.

The transitional government has yet to announce a date for elections to replace the military regime that has held power since soldiers ousted president Alpha Conde in 2021.

West African regional bloc Ecowas has pushed for a return to civilian rule.
