POLAND: Authorities in Warsaw demanded an explanation from Russia today after one of its missiles strayed into Polish airspace during a major missile attack on Ukraine, prompting the Nato member to activate F-16 fighter jets.
Armed Forces Operational Command of Poland, a Nato member, said in a statement that there was a violation of Polish airspace by one of the cruise missiles launched by Russia against towns in western Ukraine.
BRAZIL: Federal police today arrested the men suspected of ordering the killing of Rio de Janeiro councilwoman Marielle Franco in 2018.
Police sources with knowledge of the investigation told reporters that congressman Chiquinho Brazao and his brother Domingos Brazao, a member of Rio state’s accounts watchdog, were detained.
Rivaldo Barbosa, the head of Rio’s police when the murder took place, was also arrested for alleged obstruction of the investigation, the sources said.
INDONESIA: The bodies of three Rohingya refugees were found in the sea as the Indonesian authorities ended a search for survivors from a boat that capsized near Aceh province, the provincial search and rescue agency said today.
Fishers and a search-and-rescue team rescued 75 people from the boat on Thursday after they survived on its overturned hull throughout the night.
NIGERIA: At least 137 of nearly 300 Nigerian schoolchildren abducted more than two weeks ago from their school in the north-western state of Kaduna were released today, the West African nation’s military said.
School authorities said a total of 287 students were kidnapped during the attack, at least 100 of them aged 12 or younger.
