Sport in brief with Jamie J: October 4, 2024

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Ipswich can follow up their stunning 100-82 win over EuroCup Champions London when they visit the Essex Rebels for another Betty Codona Trophy match this afternoon. Ipswich are the first ever non-top tier team to win in the Trophy and only the second domestic team to beat London since 2022. Elsewhere tomorrow Newcastle play Durham before Nottingham meet Sheffield and Cardiff Met face Leicester tomorrow.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Defending champions Celtic came from two down to draw 2-2 with Premier League table-toppers Rangers at the Broadwood stadium on Thursday evening. Goals from Kirsty Howat and Katie Wilkinson had put the Gers in front before a penalty from Saoirse Noonan and Celya Barclais’s 87th-minute strike levelled things up. Rangers are now a point clear of second-placed Glasgow City with Celtic a further point back in third.

SPEEDWAY: Dan Bewley top-scored with a perfect 15 points from his five rides and captain Brady Kurtz notched up 11+1 as Manchester’s Belle Vue Aces won 49-41 at Leicester on Thursday night for a 103-77 aggregate victory and the Premiership Grand Final trophy. The Aces had finished third in the regular season, three points back from runners up Leicester and five behind Sheffield, who they beat in the play-off semi-finals.
