STRONG FORM: England’s Maia Bouchier

AMERICAN FOOTBALL: Seattle came from behind to beat New England 13-10 as the 61st NFL campaign opened with the same result as last season’s Super Bowl final. Reserve quarterback Drew Lock threw a fourth-quarter 45-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba to level the game before a Jason Myers field goal sealed Seattle’s win. The LA Rams are up against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne this morning.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Unbeaten Championship leaders Stenhousemuir are on a five-match winning run when they face Hearts at Ochilview Park this evening for the opening tie of the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals. The other last eight fixtures see 2016 winners Ross County up against Hibernian and Kilmarnock meeting Aberdeen on Saturday before last year’s runners-up Celtic are at Rangers on Sunday lunchtime.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: It’s sixth against seventh as the NRL play-offs begin this morning with 21-time winners South Sydney Rabbitohs up against Newcastle. Table-topping Penrith continue their search for a fifth title in six years when they face Sydney Roosters on Sunday after New Zealand Warriors have faced the Dolphins and Cronulla take on North Queensland. The Dolphins are the only team in the last eight to have never reached a Grand Final.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Maia Bouchier continued her recent run of good form with another century as Hampshire thumped the Blaze by seven wickets to move top of League One in the One Day Cup. The Blaze will still become regular-season champions if they avoid defeat against bottom-of-the-table Essex at Chesterfield tomorrow. The battle to join the top two in the play-offs will be decided on Saturday when Surrey visit Somerset.
