RUGBY LEAGUE: Five-time Super League winner Tommy Makinson will retire at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old former England wing has made 40 appearances for current club Catalans Dragons since joining from St Helens last year.

He spent 14 seasons with Saints, winning Super League titles in 2014, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, in addition to the Challenge Cup in 2021 and a memorable World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers in 2023.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Lawrence Shankland insists there were positive takeaways from Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Hibernian which left Rangers fans raging at more dropped William Hill Premiership points.

In Derek McInnes’s first home game as Gers boss, Hibs took the lead in the 12th minute with a Josh Campbell penalty before Rangers forward Youssef Chermiti, subject to a failed bid by Galatasaray for a reported club record fee of £22 million, was taken away on a stretcher after picking up an impact injury.

SNOOKER: Shaun Murphy broke Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 12-year record for the most unanswered points in a professional match as he thrashed Matthew Selt 6-0 at the China Open in Taiyuan.

Murphy, who also equalled the record of four consecutive centuries, opened the first-round tie with breaks of 18, 61, 132, 103, 139, 113 and 41 for a new record of 607 points without reply.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Moses Itauma has shut down talk of future stadium fights and insisted his sole focus is on claiming the world heavyweight title with victory over Filip Hrgovic on August 29.

British heavyweight prospect Itauma (14-0, 12KOs) will fight for the vacant IBF crown in his 15th professional fight at O2 Arena and aim to remain on course to dominate the blue-riband division for the next decade.
