Ekaterina Alexandrova

WOMEN’S TENNIS: World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been knocked out of the Canadian Open after losing to Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4 in the round of 16. Alexandrova won the opening set but missed three break points before Sabalenka forced a decider. Sabalenka led in the third, but Alexandrova rallied to go 4-1 ahead. The Belarusian levelled the set, only to double-fault as the Russian sealed victory and advanced to the quarter-finals.

MEN’S TENNIS: Britain’s Cameron Norrie has been knocked out of the Canadian Open after losing 6-2, 7-6 (8) to French 18th seed Arthur Fils in Montreal. Fils used his powerful serve to take the first set comfortably, while Norrie raised his level in the second to force a tiebreak. Despite creating two set points, Norrie could not convert either opportunity as Fils sealed victory in one hour and 43 minutes.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Phoebe Litchfield struck 55 as Sunrisers Leeds kept their Women’s Hundred semi-final hopes alive with a comfortable six-wicket victory over Welsh Fire, who were eliminated. Fire reached 121 for eight after Freya Kemp made an unbeaten 72 from 45 balls, surviving three dropped catches. Litchfield smashed six fours and three sixes before Jess Jonassen hit the winning boundary, with Sunrisers completing the chase with 26 balls remaining.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Five-time Super League winner Tommy Makinson will retire at the end of the season. The 34-year-old former England wing has made 40 appearances for current club Catalans Dragons since joining from St Helens last year. He spent 14 seasons with Saints, winning Super League titles in 2014, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, in addition to the Challenge Cup in 2021 and a memorable World Club Challenge victory over Penrith in 2023.
