MEN’S FOOTBALL: England striker Ivan Toney has been charged with assault following an incident at a nightclub in Soho. The Met Police said Toney, 30, of Northampton, was charged on Thursday July 31 with assault causing actual bodily harm. The force said the charge relates to an assault which reportedly took place on December 6 last year at a nightclub on Wardour Street in central London. Toney will appear at Westminster magistrates’ court on Thursday September 24.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: World number one Aryna Sabalenka eased into the fourth round of the Canadian Open in Toronto with a straight-sets victory over China’s Zhang Shuai. The reigning US Open champion needed just 76 minutes to secure a 6-3 6-4 win. Sabalenka will next face Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, who advanced with a straight sets victory over Australia’s Talia Gibson.

PADEL: British number one Christian Medina Murphy believes strong crowds at this week’s maiden London P1 event are “amazing news” for the growth of padel in Britain. Over 20,000 spectators were expected to attend the Olympia venue in Kensington by the conclusion of Britain’s first professional padel tournament on Sunday. Wild card Medina Murphy delighted home fans on Tuesday with a historic victory alongside partner Alberto Garcia Jimenez on the opening day of the main draw on Centre Court.

CURLING: Eve Muirhead has announced she is to return to competition four years after retiring following the Beijing Winter Olympics. The decorated Team GB curler, a four-time Olympian and gold medallist in Beijing, is set to return to action in mixed doubles alongside two-time Olympic silver medallist Bobby Lammie, with sights set on the 2030 Games. The pair won the mixed doubles world championship in 2022 and will reunite in pursuit of Olympic qualification for Alpes 2030.
