MEXICO rushed federal security forces to the southern state of Chiapas following the abduction of 14 police officers on Tuesday.
The mass abduction, reportedly by gunmen who blocked a road on which the police were travelling, underlines the weakness of state authority in a region dominated by drug cartels.
It took place between Ocozocoautla and the regional capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez. A confrontation between the National Guard and suspected drug traffickers near the former town left an officer and a civilian dead on June 19.
