HOMELESSNESS in rural England has risen by 40 per cent in the last five years, a charity revealed today.

CPRE, which campaigns for affordable housing in rural England, attributes the mammoth increase to a boom in second homes, housing waiting lists, record house prices and stagnating wages.

Its analysis revealed that a greater proportion of people are sleeping rough in rural areas than they are in cities such as London or Leeds.
