EBOLA: Ebola has killed more than 1,700 people in eastern Congo in the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease. Some 3,802 cases had been recorded, with 1,707 deaths, according to yesterday’s latest government update. The outbreak, declared on May 15, has been linked to the Bundibugyo virus for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments.

 

SOUTH KOREA: A group of eight South Korean students were detained yesterday for allegedly breaking into a US air base while shouting anti-US slogans, South Korean authorities said.

US military personnel detained the four male and four female students after they allegedly entered Osan Air Base near the capital Seoul. They were later transferred to the custody of South Korean authorities, police said.

 

GREECE: Firefighters west of Athens raced to exploit a break in high winds yesterday, working to strengthen containment lines as forecasters warned that stronger gusts and rising temperatures would return in coming days. Several fires that burnt through mountain communities and coastal areas west of the Greek capital were brought under control overnight. Costas Tsingas, head of the Greek Firefighters Association, said: “The goal is for the day to end better than it started.”

 

GUATEMALA: Authorities in Guatemala have ordered evacuations in some southern communities around the Fuego volcano, which is erupting.

Claudinne Ogaldes, executive secretary of the Guatemalan disaster managing agency, confirmed on Monday evening that the eruption started on Monday morning and increased during the day, which led to evacuation orders for two villages around the mountain.
