After a bruising early defeat to Australia, England went into Thursday’s game knowing another loss would see them miss out on a place in the semi-finals for the first time since netball was introduced to the Games in 1998.

Tchine told PA: “We obviously wanted to challenge Australia, and I feel like we did to some extent. But once that loss happened, we just had to reset. From then on, it’s literally do-or-die.

“We literally said before the game that we were going to give our all — blood, sweat and tears. If you can’t do the job for yourself, do it for the person beside you. That mindset really helped us get over the line.”

England will have to significantly improve to see off the Kiwis, who denied them at the same stage in Birmingham four years ago and start as heavy favourites to seal a place in tomorrow’s final.

But after shrugging off a significant deficit at the end of the first quarter, the manner in which her team rallied for victory – bolstered by the introduction of goalkeeper Halimat Adio – gives 25-year-old Tchine cause for confidence.

“I think it’s really exciting,” she added. “We went out there and gave everything, but I still think there’s another gear we can find. That alone is really exciting. It’s about finding that extra level and bringing it when it matters.”
