COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Australia topped the medals table by a huge margin after winning nearly a third of all gold medals on offer during the Glasgow Games. England finished second, 61 medals behind the Aussies, with Canada third. South African swimmer Chad le Clos is now the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth history after securing his 21st medal, while Wales’s Emma Finucane became the first cyclist to win four golds at a single games.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: London Broncos extended their 100 per cent record to 20 Championship games, but were involved in their closest fight of the season after edging to a 42-36 win at fourth-placed Widnes. Newcastle moved clear in second with a 40-16 victory at Workington following third-placed Oldham’s 46-18 stuffing at Doncaster. Bottom-of-the-table North Wales suffered another big defeat, 6-68 at home to Goole.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: League of Ireland champions Shamrock Rovers and compatriots Larne are both in Europa League third qualifying round first leg action this evening. Larne take on Georgia’s Iberia 1999 while Shamrock welcome Albania’s Egnatia Rrogozhine to south-west Dublin. Rangers enter the fray on Thursday when they visit Poland to face Jagiellonia Bialystok and Hearts are at two-time European Cup winners Benfica.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Juventus have re-signed striker Randal Kolo Muani from Paris St Germain on a permanent basis. The France international, 27, scored 10 times in 22 appearances during a loan spell with Juve in the second half of the 2024-25 season. Kolo Muani spent last term with Tottenham but managed only one goal in 30 Premier League games as the north London club narrowly avoided relegation.
