SOME 400 workers at food wholesaler Brake Brothers have secured an extra £1,638 pay over the year, Unite announced on Monday.

Warehouse, administrative, hygiene, distribution drivers’ basic hourly wage will increase by up to 4.85 per cent, backdated to April.

The union said that 94 per cent of its members supported strike action at the site in Newhouse, Motherwell, on July 14, but this was not publicised due to ongoing pay negotiations.

Brake Brothers has government-based contracts to provide food to Scottish prisons, schools and social care homes. 

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The Brake Brothers wage deal is a good pay win successfully negotiated for our members. It builds on the successes already made at the company.

“It’s a deal which was delivered after our members emphatically backed taking industrial action, if they needed to, in order to get the increase they deserved.”
