RAIL union Aslef is warning of industrial action if employers keep stalling on ensuring drivers have access to toilets.

General secretary Dave Calfe said it was “a stark indictment of employers across the sector that here we are in 2026 having to campaign to ensure every transport worker can get access to decent toilet facilities. It is time for toilets and basic dignity at work for all transport workers.”

Aslef’s Dignity for Drivers campaign, launched in 2024, demands that employers ensure provision of safe, clean, accessible and dignified toilet facilities across the network.

Backing the demand, RMT leader Eddie Dempsey said: “Rail workers carrying out safety-critical duties should never have to rely on petrol stations or fast-food outlets to access a toilet.”

The campaign also drew support from Usdaw, whose deputy general secretary Rab Donnelly said it was not just about dignity but public safety.

“The UK is 11,000 spaces short of the rest stops and service areas drivers need.

“This means that drivers are forced to stop in unsafe locations, get poor sleep and face increased vulnerability to freight crime,” he said.
