BORDER SECURITY: Poland pledged today to increase security along its border with Ukraine after a wave of Russian drone strikes near the frontier, including two that landed within miles of Polish territory.

The move came as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow appears poised to intensify its campaign against Ukraine’s borders with European countries. 

 

MIGRANT BOAT: A boat carrying migrants from Libya to the island of Crete took on water and became stranded, leaving at least one dead while 20 are believed to be missing, authorities in Greece said.

The Greek coast guard said 51 people were rescued from the site early today, some 47 miles south of Crete.

Patrol boats, a helicopter and a drone as well as commercial vessels were involved in the search assisted by the European Union border protection agency, Frontex.

 

INDONESIA: The search for survivors of a capsized ferry in Indonesia intensified today as 17 ships and aircraft from the military, police and other agencies were deployed to join the search for 129 missing after a ferry overturned in the Java Sea on Sunday.

National Search and Rescue Agency chief Mohammad Syafii said specialised underwater teams and underwater thermal drones operated by the navy had been deployed to strengthen the search effort and speed up the evacuation of victims.

 

NORTH KOREA: North Korea said yesterday it conducted a joint live-fire drill involving missiles, artillery and drones that it claimed demonstrated “huge destructive power.”

The North’ s official Korean Central News Agency said Saturday’ s drill was meant to practice the operations of an integrated weapons control system.
