THAILAND: A gunman shot and killed a kindergarten teacher yesterday inside a school building in eastern Thailand, where 44 children and three other teachers were evacuated safely, authorities said.

The shooting took place around 11am local time inside a building at the Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province, about 93 miles south-east of the capital Bangkok.

UNITED STATES: The US sharply escalated its trade war with Canada on Tuesday, banning some Canadian dairy products and motorcycles as well as most alcoholic beverages after retaliatory Canadian tariffs took effect on about $20 billion (around £15bn) in US goods.

US President Donald Trump also moved to shut Canadian products out of large, long-term US government contracts, broadening the confrontation beyond tariffs as relations between the long-time allies deteriorate further.

GAZA: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a warning letter ahead of a libel suit against Haaretz newspaper and its journalists Shlomi Eldar and Ruth Yuval over a report that he was warned by United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed about a major Hamas operation before the October 7 attack.

In a social media post, Haaretz said it stands by the report.

SYRIA: At least four people were killed and 10 others were wounded yesterday in an explosion at a weapons warehouse in north-western Syria, according to state media.

The cause of the blast near the town of Sarmada in Idlib province was not immediately clear. 

The warehouse was used to store weapons and munitions left over from the country’s civil war from 2011 until 2024, according to the Sana news agency.
