PERU: Early results from Sunday’s Peruvian presidential election shows a slim advantage for left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez with about 50.14 per cent of the vote over the United States-backed candidate Keiko Fujimoro on 49.8 per cent, according to authorities.

The final result may take up to a month to confirm due to procedures for reviewing possible challenges.

PHILIPPINES: An offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the southern Philippines today, killing at least 32 people, injuring more than 200 others and sending a three-foot tsunami into nearby coasts.

The quake also triggered a landslide in Sarangani province in the southern Philippines that killed 13 villagers.

Rene Punzalan, a disaster-mitigation official for the province, told the DZBB radio network that the landslide hit houses in the mountainous town of Glan. Four other villagers also died in Sarangani, he said.

SPAIN: Pope Leo XIV called today for respect for the rights of migrants and international law during an address to the Spanish parliament.

In the first papal address to the Spanish legislature, the US-born Pope said a “moral renewal” was necessary in legislatures and public life to ensure respect for the inherent dignity of all people, including migrants, the unborn and the most vulnerable.

UKRAINE WAR: Ukrainian forces struck oil facilities in Russia and occupied Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian officials said today.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces shot down 310 Ukrainian drones overnight into Monday, including over the Moscow region, western and south-western Russia, Russian-occupied Crimea, and the Black and Azov Seas.

Russia hit back by targeting Ukraine with 155 drones.
